
Emeritus Clinical Professor Martin Phillips
Clinical Professor Martin Phillips is a Respiratory Physician and Honorary Clinical Professor at Macquarie University. Prior to his relocation to Sydney, Professor Phillips was a Respiratory Physician at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital from 1983, where he was appointed the Director of the Lung Cancer and Interventional Pulmonology Services. He was also Clinical Professor in Respiratory Medicine at QEII Medical Centre (Surgery), The University of Western Australia.
Professor Phillips’ interests include interventional pulmonology, lung cancer, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cystic fibrosis. He is the Principal Investigator for the Clinical Trials Unit of the Institute of Respiratory Health.
His interests in interventional pulmonology include EBUS bronchoscopy, Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy, lung volume reduction techniques for emphysema, bronchial thermoplasty for asthma, airway stenting, tumour ablation techniques and thoracoscopy.
He has research interests in clinical aspects of lung cancer, newer interventional techniques for emphysema and COPD, and pharmacological treatments of asthma and COPD. In 2021 Professor Phillips was awarded the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand's 50th Anniversary Medal for outstanding contribution and sustained excellence in respiratory education and training in Australia and New Zealand.
Professor Phillips has a strong interest in medical education, teaching medical students and trainee physicians. He is the long-standing Platinum Convenor of CTEC’s courses in Interventional Pulmonology and Medical Thoracoscopy Techniques.
