Offered for the first time in Western Australia, this new cadaveric Chest Wall Perforator Flap Workshop focuses on innovative breast-preserving surgical techniques. These techniques enable the replacement of excised breast cancer tissue as a surgical alternative to mastectomy and reconstruction in select patients.

Workshop participants will benefit from the expertise of International Guest Faculty and pioneer in oncoplastic breast-preserving surgery Dr Amit Agrawal, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon with Cambridge University Hospitals, together with expert local faculty.  

This inaugural workshop aims to consolidate knowledge and operative experience in internationally recognised oncoplastic techniques which may result in improved cosmesis, lesser extent of surgery, fewer complications and better overall patient satisfaction than that typically experienced in mastectomy and reconstruction.

 

Workshop Content:

Practical Cadaveric Sessions - Step by step dissection using: 
• Anterior and medial intercostal artery perforator flap 
• Lateral intercostal artery perforator flap
• Lateral thoracic artery perforator flap
• Thoracodorsal artery perforator flap

Didactic Sessions:

  • Live models - flap marking and Doppler identification of vessels
  • Anatomy of the chest wall perforators
  • Perforator dissection, lap insetting
  • Flap-specific approach to wide local excision
  • Tips, how to prevent complications
  • Post-operative care
  • Flap literature and future
  • How to set up a service
  • Question and answer session

Learning Outcomes: 
• Overview of perforator flap anatomy
• Indications for perforator flap technique, and contraindications
• Developing practical dissection skills including approach to tumour excision and nodes
• Understanding flap placement (propeller versus flip-over)
• Postoperative care, follow up and patient outcomes
