Workshop

This workshop aims to create an educational environment in which consultant surgeons and senior trainees are encouraged to exchange ideas and information pertaining to the latest advances in upper GI and bariatric surgery.

Suitable for: Consultant Surgeons, SET 5 Surgical Trainees, Theatre Nurses in assisting and scrubbing for workshop participants (all nurse positions now FULL!), Limited Observer positions are also available.

About

There has been a significant increase in the utilisation of procedures such as sleeve gastrectomy in the primary setting as well as for salvage from complications of gastric banding. This has resulted in an increased need for subspecialist upper GI and bariatric surgeons to consider bypass procedures more often.

The workshop will use a combination of pre-reading, didactic sessions, discussion and practical skill stations using fresh human cadaver material.

Workshop Content

Procedures Covered:

  • Sleeve gastrectomy
  • Roux-en-Y bypass (RYGB)

Procedural Discussions:

  • Complications of gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy
  • RYGB procedural overview
  • Revision of sleeve gastrectomy
  • Complications of RYGB
  • Management of Reflux:
    • The difficult hiatus
    • Pseudoachalasia

  • Fresh frozen human cadaveric dissection
