CTEC’s Cutting Edge: Advanced Surgical Procedures for Rural Generalists Workshop provides a highly relevant cadaveric dissection focused program in additional rural skills training. Timed to coincide with the Perth-based ACRRM and RDAA-hosted 22-25 October RMA25 Conference, it provides participants with a valuable opportunity to refine and consolidate surgical techniques under the expert guidance of experienced faculty in General Surgery, Urology and Podiatry.

Suitable for: Rural Generalists with surgical credentialling and Rural Generalist Surgical Trainees. It is expected practitioners have acess to appropriate levels of equipment and operating facilities., Limited positions are available for Observers, and for Theatre Nurses in the role of assistant.

About

This advanced level workshop aims to equip Rural Generalists with surgical credentialling and Rural Generalist Surgical Trainees with a reliable foundation in procedural skills, which in turn supports a greater level of service to patients in rural and remote communities. These practitioners should have access to appropriate levels of equipment and operating facilities. It does not provide certification of competence in any of the procedures outlined and practised.

 
Workshop Content

Procedures are first covered by a didactic presentation followed by a practical cadaveric session with only two participants per station. Each participant will have access to dedicated cadaveric materials.

Presentation and Practical Cadaveric Sessions:

  • Open appendicectomy
  • Open bowel repair (closing an enterotomy)
  • Umbilical hernia
  • Dissection to display inguinal and femoral triangle 
  • Stomal care
  • Scrotal exploration (urgent torsion and elective hydrocele)
  • Vasectomy
  • Management of acute and recurrent ingrown toenail
  • Management of subungual haematoma
  • Surgical management of reducible and non-reducible hammer toe deformities
  • Injection techniques for plantar fasciitis and Morton’s neuroma
  • Plantar fascia release for chronic heel pain

Training Grants:
The Australian Government is offering training grants of $2000 per day to rural and remote procedural and emergency medicine GPs to maintain their respective skills. Accreditation will be sought in this Program for the 2023-2025 Triennium. For further information about the grants contact the:

Accreditations or CPD Approvals

Approved in the ACRRM CPD Program for 9 hours in Performance Review, 0.75 hours in Educational Activity and 6 MOPS Surgery hours. Approval will be sought in the RACGP CPD Programfor 2025.
