The Cutting Edge: Managing Skin and Soft Tissue Injuries is a hands on skills training workshop utilising synthetic and animal tissue simulation models.

Suitable for: GPs, GP Proceduralists, GP Registrars and GP Trainees

About

This workshop aims to assist GPs whose practice includes more extensive management of acute and chronic injuries and is of particular relevance for rural GP Proceduralists.  Some suturing experience is recommended for participants to benefit from the procedural sessions.

Workshop Content

This highly practical workshop features the following sessions:

  • Skin biopsy and facial wounds
  • Abrasions, abscesses and foreign bodies (simple)
  • Simple lacerations and glue
  • Difficult lacerations
  • Wounds in difficult places
  • Treating open fractures, including plastering techniques / back slabs
  • Treatment options for clean lacerations
  • Bandaging techniques
  • Treatment options for ragged lacerations
  • Lipoma and cyst removal

Presentations

  • Treatment options for abscesses
  • Wound care and minor trauma incorporating minor burns
  • Treatment options for abrasions
  • Managing hypertrophic and keloid scarring
  • Removing foreign bodies from eyes

 

Workshop Inclusions

  • Simulation models
  • Didactic sessions

  • Limited places to maximise practical learning time

Training Grants:

The Australian Government is offering training grants of $2000 per day to rural and remote procedural and emergency medicine GPs. The Rural Procedural Grants Program provides financial assistance for procedural GPs in rural and remote areas to access relevant activities in order to assist them in maintaining and updating their skills. 

Reapproval for this educational activity for a 1 Day Rural Procedural Grant in Emergency or Surgery will be sought for 2023-2025.

Accreditations or CPD Approvals

This workshop is an approved activity in the RACGP CPD Program for the 2023-2025 Triennium. It is approved for 3.5 hours in Educational Activities and 4 hours in Reviewing Performance. This workshop is eligible for a 1 Day Rural Procedural Grant in Emergency or Surgery.
Approved in the ACRRM CPD Program for 6.25 PDP hours in Educational Activity and 0.75 hours in Outcome Measurement.
