Generic Surgical Sciences Exam Training Course


The Generic Surgical Sciences Exam (GSSE) Training Course is geared towards maximising knowledge for exam preparation. It will provide committed candidates with a thorough grounding to complement their own personal efforts in preparing for entry to surgical training. The GSSE Training Course has been designed to improve knowledge, understanding and application of anatomy, physiology and pathology as it pertains to surgical training. After an orientation event, this course is run over three weekends in July, August and September 2018.

Suitable for: Junior Doctors especially those aiming to sit the GSSE in October 2018. Recommended for RMO level and above. Interested Interns must contact the Course Co-ordinator directly to discuss suitability.

Course Structure
Following an orientation event the course will run over three weekends.
Orientation 6.30pm Tuesday 24 July 

  • Introduction to the course
  • Pre-testing component (MCQs)
  • Test feedback

Weekend One 9.00am - 5.00pm 
Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 July

  • Neuroanatomy
  • ENT
  • Orthopaedic anatomy upper limb
  • Orthopaedic anatomy lower lImb 
  • Two hour lab utilising pro-sections
  • Neurophysiology
  • Endocrine anatomy and physiology
  • Reproductive physiology and gynaecologic pathology

Weekend Two 9.00am - 5.00pm 
Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 August

  • HPB anatomy and pathology
  • Oesophagus, stomach, spleen
  • Abdominal wall, retroperitoneum
  • Small and large bowel
  • Rectum, pelvic floor, anus
  • Statistics in medicine
  • Two hour lab utilising pro-sections
  • Gastrointestinal physiology
  • Cells, nerves, muscles
  • Urological anatomy and pathology
  • Renal physiology

Weekend Three 9.00am - 5.00pm Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September

  • Cardiothoracic anatomy
  • Cardiovascular physiology
  • Respiratory physiology
  • Vascular anatomy
  • Two hour lab utilising pro-sections
  • Neoplasia
  • Inflammation, immunity, sepsis
  • Genetics
