This unique new cadaveric workshop is an Australian first in training in the surgical treatment of groin and abdominal wall hernias. It offers a unique opportunity to delve into the core anatomical aspects and operative intricacies of groin and midline hernias in CTEC’s highly realistic simulated setting.

Suitable for: General Surgery Trainees SET 1-3. Suitable for IMGs under supervision or progressing towards an alternative pathway to FRACS. Limited places available for Unaccredited Registrars who have made substantial progress towards successful application for GSET., Theatre Nurses as assistants.

This workshop serves as the first step towards understanding anatomy, pathophysiology and complex abdominal wall issues in a rapidly evolving subspecialty involving cutting edge research and newer operative techniques.  
 

Workshop Content

This workshop will feature one expert faculty member per cadaveric station:

Morning Open Surgical Sessions

Presentation:

  • Anatomy - Groin
  • Cadaveric Practical Session:
  • Open repair of inguinal hernia 
  • Open repair of femoral hernia (Low Approach)

Presentation:

  • Anatomy - Umbilicus and Linea Alba
     

Presentations - Clinical Cases:

  • Umbilical hernia
  • Paraumbilical hernia
  • Practical Sessions: 
  • Open repair of umbilical hernia
  • Open repair of paraumbilical hernia

Afternoon Laparoscopic  Surgical Sessions

Practical Sessions: 

  • Ergonomics
  • Entry techniques
  • Trocar placement
  • Instrument placement 
  • Role of the assistant

Presentations:

  • Anatomy - Extra peritoneal approach
  • Clinical case of recurring inguinal hernia
  • Practical Sessions - Laparoscopic TEP: 
  • Left Total Extraperitoneal approach
  • Right laparoscopic Transabdominal Pre-Peritoneal (TAPP)

 

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the ability to securely close a surgical wound using a subcuticular suture technique
  • Discuss the anatomy of the abdominal wall, inguinal and femoral regions relevant to ventral and groin hernias
  • Demonstrate safe and ergonomically sound minimum access techniques
  • Perform open ventral hernia repairs and laparoscopic groin hernia repairs under supervision

Non-WA Participant: $1250
